About the Journal
Compendium: Journal of Comparative Studies is an open-access, twice-yearly peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to advancing scholarship in the evolving field of Comparative Studies. Founded on the rich tradition of Comparative Literature while embracing new critical paradigms that address the challenge of studying literature and the arts in present times, our journal responds to the expansion of this discipline by exploring the dialogues, intersections, and methodological exchanges between literary studies and related fields within the humanities.
We reject the notion of comparison without limits or boundaries, instead advocating for critical and rigorous forms of comparatism that deepen our understanding of how literary and artistic works communicate across cultural, linguistic, historical, and medial borders. Compendium is an international platform for young and established scholars whose work transcends traditional academic divisions while remaining anchored in the humanities and showing a special engagement with Comparative Literature, World Literature, Interarts Studies, Literature, Cultural and Visual Studies.
OUR FOCAL POINTS
Compendium publishes original research that examines literary and artistic phenomena through comparative frameworks. We specifically focus on:
literary relationships: studies examining connections across different national literatures, languages, authors, historical periods, or literary movements;
interdisciplinary approaches: research that applies literary methodologies to other art forms, or that brings insights from other humanities disciplines to bear on literary analysis;
theoretical innovations: scholarship that contributes to the development of comparative methodologies and theoretical frameworks for analyzing cultural texts;
media intersections: investigations of how literature interacts with other aesthetic forms such as film, visual arts, music, and digital media.
FREQUENCY
Compendium is published semiannually, with two issues released in June and December.
